This won’t be the last car-inspired NFT, we think

The NFT game—that’s a non-fungible token for the less tech-savvy of you bunch—can be a little hard to follow if you’re only just now hearing about it. Basically, it’s digital art you can buy and own the rights to…but other people can simply just right click on to download?

As we said, it can be complicated. Even we don’t fully grasp what the entire movement is all about, so here’s a neat little explained put up by The Verge for you. Nissan, though, seems to know what’s going on here.

The Japanese carmaker is jumping into the NFT game with a one-of-one release inspired by the Nissan GT-R. The brand paid Canadian artist Alex McLeod a hefty sum to produce the piece—which is going for a whopping $280,000 Canadian dollars (P11.2 million) via auction. Yikes.

Yes, that’s worth more than an actual GT-R. But here’s the catch: Whoever ends up taking ownership of this NFT piece will also be handed the keys to a brand-new 2021 Nissan GT-R Nismo Special Edition finished in Stealth Grey. What’s more, all of the proceeds from the sale will go directly to charity.

“When designing the NFT, I wanted to create a piece that has a sense of familiarity, but which is also totally imagined and exciting,” McLeod said in a statement.

“The GT-R Nismo Special Edition is unlike any car I’ve seen before, as it looks like it comes from another world. I wanted to explore that idea and show people what it could look like, by bridging realities between our physical and imagined worlds. I really thought about how the GT-R NISMO Special Edition not only transports us physically, but emotionally and psychologically, and aimed to capture this feeling through my work.”

Not that we have the money to bid on this thing, but we still aren’t too sure about throwing large sums at what’s essentially a GIF on the Internet anyone can download. That bonus GT-R Nismo does sweeten the pot quite a bit, though. What say you?
