We previously reported that Kia Philippines will be launching a new vehicle in the fourth quarter of 2020, and we guessed that it could be the Stonic. The carmaker has yet to confirm this as of this writing, but we’re definitely hoping we guessed correctly because the subcompact crossover just received some updates that we’d love to see in our market as well.

Most noteworthy among these updates is a line of new powertrains. Heading that list is Kia’s new mild-hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) ‘EcoDynamics+’ setup that now makes its way to the Stonic. It combines a new ‘Smartstream’ 1.0-liter T-GDi engine with a 48V MHEV system.

The MHEV setup also sports a new mild-hybrid starter-generator (MHSG) unit that switches the vehicle from ‘motor’ to ‘generator’ modes to improve overall efficiency. The MHSG uses electric power to provide assistance during acceleration in ‘motor’ mode, thus reducing engine load and emissions, and can automatically switch to ‘generator’ mode during deceleration and under certain conditions to recharge the battery.

This new mild-hybrid setup is offered in 99hp and 118hp configurations. It’s available with Kia’s new intelligent Manual Transmission and its ‘clutch-by-wire’ system that was introduced in the facelifted Rio just a while back.

In addition to this new EcoDynamics+ powertrain, the Stonic also gets a new 1.0-liter T-GDi Smartstream gasoline engine that generates 99hp and is mated to either six-speed manual or a seven-speed DCT. Another engine option is the improved version of the naturally aspirated 1.2-liter mill that’s capable of 83hp.

The Stonic also gets a new 4.2-inch instrument cluster and an eight-inch infotainment system that sports Kia’s innovative ‘Phase II’ features—more on that here. The vehicle likewise gets Kia’s new safety and driver-assist systems such as lane-keep assist, blind-spot collision warning and collision-avoidance assist, lane-follw assist, and smart cruise control.

New 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels as well as Perennial Gray and Sporty Blue exterior color options complete the list of updates. The Stonic can now also be had with a two-tone finish, with options including the new Most Yellow finish.

Again, we still don’t have confirmation if this refreshed Stonic is the model that’s scheduled to arrive on our shores later this year, though we have a good feeling it is. If and when Kia Philippines does bring it in, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that these new engine options make their way here, too.
