The hybrid Honda Civic has gotten much more accessible through two new variants—not in our market, though, but in neighboring Thailand. Officially called the Civic e:HEV EL and EL+, these trims offer more basic styling and fewer bells and whistles than the top-spec RS e:HEV that we have locally.

All of these electrified Civics share the same e:HEV system, comprising a 2.0-liter engine and dual motors mated to an E-CVT. This means that buyers get the same performance across the entire lineup.

So what exactly did the lower variants lose? For starters, the EL and EL+ configurations have smaller 17-inch wheels, as compared to the 18-inch alloys on the RS. They also drop the spoiler and the exhaust pipe sleeve at the back.

Inside, the EL gets basic cloth upholstery, while the EL+ is done up in leather—for context, the RS variant adds suede to its leather finishes, as well as special red stitching. The EL and the EL+ also lose the leather wrapping on the steering wheel, the wireless charging pad, and the ambient lighting. The sound system and the digital gauge cluster have also been downgraded, but the nine-inch infotainment display remains as is.

Honda Sensing is still on board, although the lower-end Civics lose a couple of sensors. Other than that, the overall finishes look decently similar across the board. As expected, prices significantly vary between the three variants.

Locally, the price of the Civic RS e:HEV has likely been its severest pain point. These more accessible options could open Honda’s hybrid sedan to more buyers, keeping the nameplate more competitive.
