The mere idea of electrifying the Porsche 911 is more than enough to chills down the car’s purist fanbase. Remember, these were the same people who had a violent reaction when the headlights were slightly less round than its predecessor. We’re looking at you, 996.

And yet, here we are now with the 911 GTS, the first ever hybrid model from its 60-odd year lineage. Yes, there are those upset about it, but its hybrid system works in a way that defies usual convention.

Your typical hybrid can power a car and send drive to the wheels during short trips. However, the one in the 911 GTS does none of that. The thing is, it’s not a mild hybrid system either. So, what’s the purpose of electrifying this particular 911?

For more power, of course.

It sounds confusing at first, but the two electric motors attached to this Porsche 911 are there to give an ‘e-boost’ of sorts to provide more power to the engine. At the same time, these motors spool up the turbocharger quicker to eliminate lag. Fuel economy benefits? Close to none.

Instead, it gets a sizable rise in power output. From 473hp from the previous 911 GTS, it now makes 534hp, an increase of 60hp. The result of that is a factory claimed 0 to 100kph time of just 3.0 seconds. Top speed is rated at 312kph.

But how does one tell the electrified GTS from, say, a standard Carrera? Keen 911 spotters will immediately notice the vertical slats on the corner air intakes. Those, by far, are the biggest giveaway, and this variant is the only one that gets it.

The odds of it coming to the Philippines? Pretty good, we reckon. Well, we have a better chance of seeing it here than the all-new Audi A5.
