For decades, the Toyota Century has been Japan’s premiere luxury vehicle. It’s been the chariot of choice of the Japanese royal family, as well as ride of tycoons, industry leaders, and pretty much anyone with billions of yen in their account.
It’s safe to say that the Century is Japan’s best interpretation of Rolls-Royce. For the longest time, it was only offered as a traditional sedan, but it’s since been joined by an SUV version. Now, it seems that the Century family will add another member.
Set to make its world premiere at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show is the Toyota Century Coupe concept. It’s the first two-door model in Toyota to wear a century badge, so to say it’s a big deal is an understatement.

With that, the Century name is venturing in uncharted territory. Should it make production, it looks like a good match for the Rolls-Royce Spectre and Bentley Continental GT.
Design-wise, the concept takes some elements from both the sedan and SUV models of the Century. There’s the monolithic front end dominated by boxy and imposing lines. It also has classic coupe proportions with a long hood and a short rear deck. The high and broad shoulders are complemented by a low and sleek roof line, and the rear end tapers down for an elegant look.
What’s interesting here are the sliding doors in the concept. While unlikely to reach production, one can say that it’s a dramatic way of entering its presumably grand cabin. We might see a more conventional opening should Toyota decide to build it.
Of course, the fate of this concept will depend on public reaction, as well as actual demand. Granted, this is a niche model, but it still needs to present a business case. So, any billionaires interested in a Japanese Rolls-Royce?
