To start off 2020, Ford Philippines expanded its Ranger lineup with the local reintroduction of the Ranger FX4. After some time away, the feisty version of Ford’s popular truck has made its way back to our shores.
There’s already a handful of Ranger variants available in the local market—all of which were also given some minor upgrades for 2020—but this newest one bridges the small gap between the Wildtrak and the model’s base XLS and XLT versions. The FX4’s positioning and price give customers an option that can be considered a compromise between a workhorse and a premium pickup truck. The FX4’s design is what truly sets it apart from others in the market and not just in the Ford stable. Up front is a black mesh grille and skid plate, while the rear end gets blacked-out taillamps and a black bumper. A tubular roll bar has been mounted out back as well. Highlighting the side profile are FX4 decals, black step boards, and unique gloss-black 18-inch wheels that sport black Ford logo center caps. All these black elements provide the exterior some decent contrast against the exterior paint job (unless you’re getting your unit in Absolute Black, of course, but that’s a good look, too).
In terms of size, the FX4 is as big as the Ranger XLT, stretching out to 5,354mm long, 1,860mm wide, and 1,821mm tall. The XLS is a bit longer, while the Wildtrak is slightly taller. The FX4 has 3,220mm wheelbase and a ground clearance of 232mm. Available colors are Arctic White, True Red, Meteor Gray, Aluminum Metallic, and Absolute Black.
As with the higher Ranger variants, the FX4 cabin is decked out in leather. The dark interior features some subtle contrast stitching on the tiller, dash, side panels, shift boot, handbrake, and seats. FX4 logos can also be found on the seats and the floor mats—with the latter adding a bit more contrast to the inside—while a foldable armrest has been fitted in the back.
Engine and specs
The Ranger FX4 gets the same engine as the XLS and XLT—we’re talking about the 2.2-liter turbodiesel here. This powertrain is capable of generating 158hp at 3,200rpm and 385Nm of torque at 1,600-2,500rpm, and is mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Only a 4x2 drivetrain is available, though.
Underneath, the suspension comprises of a double-wishbone setup with coil springs up front and leaf springs in the back. Stopping power is handled by front ventilated disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Fuel tank capacity maxes out at 80 liters.
When it comes to extra goodies, the FX4 doesn’t necessarily impress. To be fair, the price tag doesn’t suggest otherwise, anyway. The two front seats are adjusted manually, there is no keyless ignition available, and the A/C controls are fully analog.
The infotainment system, however, provides Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as well as a new eight-screen interface, so that should be a win in anyone’s book. Other added features that come as standard include cruise control, ABS with EBD, front passenger airbags (no curtain bags here), Isofix child seat anchorage points, and rear parking sensors.
As mentioned earlier, the Ford Ranger FX4 comes with an affordable price tag that falls right above the workhorse models, but just under the more premium Wildtrak offerings. You can check out the prices of this newly launched variant below:
