Several years ago, owning a personal 3D printer was kind of looked at as buying into a fad. Now, though? The tech is increasingly looking like the next giant leap in manufacturing everything from toys to car parts.

Porsche knows what’s up. The German car manufacturer has begun sales for its neat new 3D-printed bucket seat.

Porsche says its new seats can be customized to suit very specific needs when it comes to customer requirements. The cushioning and backrest are made via 3D printing, and they come in three different rigidity levels.

Made from a combination of expanded polypropylene and polyurethane-based material, the new product is supposedly 8% lighter than traditional seats. The seats come wrapped in Race-Tex as well—a non-slip material that provides good ventilation thanks to a perforated surface.

“Seats adapted to individual drivers have been available for a long time in professional motorsport. Now Porsche also offers a road-approved customization with different rigidity grades as standard,” Porsche test driver Lars kern said.

“During the initial test drives I was impressed by the ergonomics—the slightly lower seat position and improved thigh support are similar to what you get from a seat in a racing car. The passive ventilation is impressive too.”

Right now, the 3D-printed seat is available for the 718 Boxster/Cayman and the 911. Porsche adds that the offering will soon make its way to the brand’s car configurator. Think this kind of product will ever catch on with more mainstream car manufacturers as well?
