Mitsubishi’s iconic Pajero is finally back after a five-year hiatus. Recently, the Japanese automaker unveiled the latest version of its popular SUV. With the resurgence of rugged SUVs in the last couple of years, it only made sense that Mitsubishi would bring back its legendary sports-utility vehicle. For this edition of size comparo, we’ll be pitting the new Pajero against the latest version of its longtime rival, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 250 Series.

The all-new Pajero measures 4,920mm long, 1,925mm wide, and 1,910mm tall. This makes it 25mm shorter, 55mm narrower, and 25mm lower than the Prado. The new Mitsubishi SUV rides on a 2,870mm wheelbase, which is 20mm longer between the axles than the Toyota SUV. In their high trims, both sports utility vehicles come with 20-inch alloy wheels as standard. The Pajero rolls on 31-inch-diameter 255/55 R20 rollers, which are 1.5 inches smaller than the 32.5-inch-diameter 265/60 R20 rubber of the Prado. The Pajero has a ground clearance of 230mm, or 15mm more than the Prado despite the new Mitsubishi SUV’s smaller-diameter tires.

Here’s a bonus comparison: The all-new Pajero is 80mm longer, 110mm wider, and 75mm taller than the Mitsubishi Montero Sport. The new Mitsubishi SUV’s wheelbase is 70mm longer than its smaller sibling. The new Pajero has a 12mm advantage in ground clearance as well.

Now for a quick overview of our two main featured premium midsize three-row SUVs. Mitsubishi’s new fifth-generation Pajero returns to a body-on-frame construction like the first- and second-gen models. Under its hood is the latest version of the  2.4-liter 4N16 diesel engine with a single variable-geometry turbocharger. This mill puts out 201hp and 480Nm of torque. It comes with Super Select 4WD-II (SS4-II) and Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC).

Toyota’s Land Cruiser Prado 250 Series is built on the carmaker’s TNGA-F architecture. Unlike its curvy predecessor, the latest model adopts a boxier design, a nod to the original 70-series-based model. The Philippine spec is powered by a 2.4-liter turbopetrol engine that pumps out 277hp and 430Nm of torque. As expected, four-wheel drive is also standard. Both the Pajero and the Prado come with eight-speed automatic transmissions.

How much will it cost? While official pricing hasn’t been announced as of this writing, the Thailand-built Pajero will likely cost less than the Japan-sourced CBU Prado units, which start at P4,806,000.

What do you think of Mitsubishi’s all-new Pajero? Would you consider it over the Prado? Let us know in the comments.
