Are diesel’s days numbered? Probably not—at least not around markets like ours. We’d be lying, though, if we said that the possibility of electrified pickup trucks entering our country doesn’t intrigue us.
Now, that possibility might be one step closer to reality. Isuzu has just shown off the D-Max EV at the 2024 Bangkok International Motor Show, and boy, does it look promising.

From the outside, the vehicle is distinguishable from its regular diesel-powered counterpart via the new front grille. It features a flatter appearance and small slits, as well as some popping blue trim that represents its cleaner powertrain. Save those details and some ‘EV Concept’ decals, the two appear largely similar to the non-EV version.

Take a look at the vehicle’s insides, however, and it’s clear that this is a very different proposition. The Isuzu D-Max EV runs on a dual-motor electric 4WD setup that draws power from a 66.9kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The front motor churns out 40kW, while the rear produces up to 90kW. Total torque output is rated at 325Nm—not that insane, but keep in mind that this comes instantaneously.

The vehicle’s top speed is 130kph, and Isuzu says the truck can still carry up to one ton of cargo despite the electric setup. The Japanese carmaker has previously said that it’s aiming for a 2025 release in Europe, followed by Australia and Thailand soon after.
A full EV pickup truck sounds great, but we understand if you aren’t entirely sold on the idea yet. Given the funds, would you jump into this bandwagon and become an early adopter or stick with tried and tested diesel offerings?
