There’s nothing like the sight of a gigantic Christmas tree to ring in the holiday season. This year, the Ortigas Center is lighting its tree up with a little help from an unusual power source: The Nissan Leaf.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the vehicle, this EV features what the Japanese car manufacturer calls vehicle-to-everything (V2X) bi-directional charging technology. Basically, this means electricity goes two ways when it comes to the Leaf. It can charge up using a power source, and return the favor by giving energy back to the power grid.
This Christmas tree you see lit up in Ortigas? It’s actually being powered by the Leaf’s battery pack. The vehicle will be dropping by Glorietta in Makati City to light up the mall’s Christmas tree from December 11 to 13, and will follow that up with a similar activity at the Alabang Town Center from December 18 to 20.
“Nissan and Pasig City share a common vision of a smarter, safer, and more sustainable future, and the adoption of electric vehicles in the country is an important part of this future,” Nissan Philippines president and managing director Atsushi Najima said in a statement.
“We hope that the Nissan Leaf, lighting this Christmas tree in one of the country’s foremost business centers, offers a shining symbol of hope and a bright future for Filipinos,” he added.
Frankly, this is a great way to drum up excitement for the vehicle’s local launch, whenever that may be. We can definitely see tech like this coming in handy in the event of power outages caused by typhoons and other natural disasters.
