Earlier this year, Toyota came under the scrutiny of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) following reported discrepancies in the brand’s vehicle testing and certification processes. It’s a pretty big deal and has so far resulted in the sales and production of three models—namely the Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio, and Yaris Cross—being halted.

Alright, let’s get sidetracked here for a second. It’s important to note that locally available Toyota Yaris Cross units are made in Indonesia. Those were involved in a different certification issue matter from Toyota's affiliate, Daihatsu. With one issue after another, it does raise some questions regarding some of the brand’s procedures. Okay, back on topic.

According to Toyota, discrepancies have been found in two out of three of the company’s processes for government certification: in-house certification testing, and the submission of compatible development test data for certification. Some vehicle components and qualities, such as airbag timers, rear seats, engine power, and pedestrian safety, did not undergo the correct certification processes.

While the investigation has yet to be concluded, Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda has decided to take responsibility for the brand’s current situation.

In a recent statement, Toyoda acknowledged that “vehicles were mass-produced and sold without going through the correct certification processes,” adding he would personally “go to the genba myself and take responsibility.”

“As the person responsible for the Toyota Group, I would like to extend my sincere apologies to our customers, car enthusiasts, and all stakeholders for this issue, following Hino, Daihatsu, and Toyota Industries Corporation,” Toyoda said.

“I am truly sorry.”

“I intend to extend our efforts throughout the entire Group and restore authority to the genba to create a solid corporate culture that makes ever-better cars,” he added. “These efforts will need to be done steadily and will take time, but I will go to the genba myself and take responsibility for their progress. We appreciate your kind attention.”
