It turns out the all-new Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ are hardly the extent of the two Japanese carmakers’ collaboration. Just last month, the former unveiled the bZ4X—a high-riding EV that supposedly combines Toyota’s battery know-how with Subaru’s expertise in the drivetrain department. Now, the latter brand is unveiling its own all-electric compact SUV called the Solterra.

Scheduled for a release in Japan, the US, Canada, Europe, and China in mid-2022, the Solterra is Subaru’s first-ever offering built on its new battery electric vehicle e-Subaru Global Platform. Its name was inspired by the Latin words for sun and earth, ‘sol’ and ‘terra.’

Details are scarce at the moment, but by the way the vehicle reads on paper, it could be the bZ4X in Subie guise. The vehicle’s press release describes it as a combination of “Toyota’s outstanding vehicle electrification technology” and “Subaru’s long-accumulated all-wheel-drive technology.” This definitely sounds familiar alright.

Subaru also says that with the Solterra, it decided to focus a ton on advanced safety features. No word yet, though, on if the nameplate will build further upon the company’s already reliable EyeSight driver-assist technologies.

Unfortunately, no date for a full reveal was provided by the manufacturer. Oh well, at least this is one more release to look forward to in the meantime. Are you liking what you’ve seen so far, though?
