We’ve got to be honest here: We aren’t exactly digging the name. The proposition, though? We’re all for it.
Zeekr is the Geely Auto Group’s new electric car brand, and the Chinese auto giant wants its new baby to make a dent in an increasingly competitive global EV market.
The company is moving quickly with this one. The first batch of Zeekr EVs is expected to commence delivery in the third quarter of this year. Production duties will fall under Geely Holding, and the brand’s plan is to come out with an all-new EV offering annually over the next five years.
Developments in Zeekr’s pipeline include its own battery technology, battery management systems, and electric motors. The company also says over-the-air updates will be a thing for its offerings, as will “an unrivaled luxury vehicle experience in terms of comfort and performance.”
Geely’s announcement also details that Zeekr will initially focus on the Chinese market, but will expand to the global stage to help meet international demand for premium EVs.
This is anything but a walk in the park, especially when you consider how hard competitors like the Volkswagen Group, BMW Group, and even Tesla have been pushing to expand their reach. Geely, though, is no stranger to EVs, with companies like Lynk & Co and Volvo under its umbrella. Given its track record, it doesn’t appear like Geely is biting off more than it can chew with this move.
And that’s about it as far as details are concerned. It’s not much, but as we reported, Zeekr EVS are scheduled to start coming out later in 2021. Is this a name you’ll be paying attention to moving forward?
