We recently reported that BYD Cars dominated the Philippine electrified vehicle market in 2024 with an impressive 82% share. The Chinese carmaker’s Atto 3 compact crossover was the best-selling battery electric vehicle in the country with 1,062 units sold. For this size comparo, we’ll be pitting it against the popular Toyota Corolla Cross HEV and the upcoming Honda HR-V e:HEV. We’ve selected high-trim variants to represent each brand.

The Atto 3 measures 4,455mm long, 1,875mm wide, and 1,615mm tall, making it as long, 50mm wider, and 5mm lower than the Corolla Cross. Compared with the HR-V, it’s 70mm longer, 85mm wider, and 25mm taller. The BYD rides on a 2,720mm wheelbase, which is 80mm longer than the Toyota’s, and 110mm longer than the Honda’s.

The updated Atto 3 Premium now comes equipped with 27.25-inch-diameter 235/50 R18 tires—this is larger than the 26.86-inch-diameter 225/50 R18 rollers that come standard on the Corolla Cross GR-S HEV and the HR-V RS e:HEV. It has a 150mm ground clearance, or 11mm less than the Corolla Cross and 46mm less than the HR-V.

The three crossovers were selected due to their relatively close size and pricing. For those curious, BYD calls the Atto 3 a ‘compact,’ Toyota in our region considers the Corolla Cross a ‘compact,’ and Honda calls the HR-V a ‘subcompact.’

The Atto 3 is BYD’s compact crossover. It’s built on a dedicated BEV platform, with all having the same front-mounted 201hp motor. The Premium variant gets a 60.5kWh battery pack and has a 480km range on a full charge. The Corolla Cross is Toyota’s compact crossover, with this refreshed model now being hybrid-only. All variants feature Toyota’s familiar 1.8-liter naturally aspirated gasoline mill mated to an electric motor; its total system output is 121hp. The HR-V is Honda’s subcompact crossover, and the new e:HEV RS variant will sit at the top of the refreshed range. It will be powered by a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gas unit paired with an electric motor; its total system output is 129hp.

All three are front-wheel-drive, have unibody construction, and feature independent MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam setup at the rear.

How much do they cost? The BYD Atto 3 Premium costs P1,798,000, and the Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 GR-S HEV carries a price tag of P1,937,000. The Honda HR-V e:HEV RS still has no official pricing, but prices for the updated model line will range from P1.6 million to P1.9 million.
